Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna recently provided an injury update on winger Chiedozie Ogbene, who was stretchered off during their narrow 4-3 loss to Brentford.
The Tractor Boys experienced a rollercoaster of a match, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, only to see it slip away as they trailed 3-2. A late goal from Liam Delap seemed to have secured a draw, despite Ipswich going down to ten men due to Harry Clarke’s red card.
However, Brentfordโs Bryan Mbeumo scored in stoppage time, dealing Ipswich a heartbreaking defeat and extending their search for a Premier League win to nine matches.
On top of the loss, Ogbene’s injury added to Ipswichโs troubles, as the 27-year-old was forced off with what appeared to be an Achilles injury.
Speaking to RTE after the game, McKenna said Ogbeneโs injury “looks serious,” potentially sidelining him for an extended period: “It looks like it could be an Achilles tear, so that would be devastating for him and for us. That’s what Iโve been told at the moment. We hope that wonโt be the case but I think thatโs what looks most likely.”
When asked about recovery time, he added, “Is it a six-to-nine-month injury? Youโll have to get a medical opinion on that but an Achilles tear is a big injury.”
Despite limited appearances since joining from Luton Town, Ogbene has shown potential in his five Premier League outings, starting in three.
Last season, pundit Jamie Carragher praised the Republic of Ireland internationalโs pace and adaptability, saying, “For me, Chiedozie Ogbene has been absolutely outstanding every time I watch him.” Carragher highlighted Ogbeneโs contributions on both wings and his effectiveness in delivering quality passes and crosses.
With squad depth crucial for Ipswich’s Premier League survival, losing Ogbene for months would be a significant blow. While Ipswich fans hope the injury isnโt as severe as feared, the team is bracing for a challenging period without him.
