Despite an active trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers remain in a tough spot. With a 20-32 record and just 30 games left, they’re in a race against time to secure a postseason spot. While they sit just below the 10th-seeded Bulls, they’ve been stuck in that position for months.
Although the team’s core trio is back—at least for now—it hasn’t been enough to compensate for the loss of depth after trading away Caleb Martin, KJ Martin, and Reggie Jackson.
As a result, the front office should now be exploring the buyout market to add much-needed rotation players. This year’s rules work in their favor, and given their situation, they can’t afford to misstep.
Struggling Team Blocking 76ers from Landing Ideal Buyout Target
However, the buyout market depends on teams being willing to let players go—and it seems the 76ers may already be out of luck on one of the most sought-after options.
According to The Athletic’s David Aldridge, Washington plans to keep Malcolm Brogdon as a veteran presence for its young roster—a surprising move considering the Wizards have no playoff hopes and Brogdon will be a free agent soon.
Brogdon’s numbers this season have been modest, but that’s more about the Wizards’ priorities. Just last season, he was a high-level role player, and in the right environment, he could still be a valuable asset in the backcourt.
For the 76ers, who need playmaking and bench scoring, Brogdon would be an ideal addition. When healthy, his size, shooting, and basketball IQ make him a reliable two-way contributor.
It’s puzzling that Washington is holding onto him, but if they reconsider, the 76ers should act fast to secure him for a bargain.
There’s still time for Philadelphia to climb the standings, but the front office needs to provide roster support. Given Brogdon’s current situation, he could be an underrated acquisition that helps push them toward a playoff spot.
