Kalvin Phillips might find a way out of Manchester City before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
According to Sportrythm, Ipswich Town has become the latest Premier League club to show interest in the 28-year-old midfielder. Fulham and Everton have also been suggested as possible destinations for Phillips, who is keen to revive his career after a difficult spell at Manchester City.
Phillips joined Manchester City in July 2022, signing a six-year deal worth ยฃ42.5 million. While he initially made a positive impression, his form dipped after returning from the World Cup in December 2022.
Manager Pep Guardiolaย publicly commented on Phillips’ weight, though he later apologized for his remarks. In January, Phillips was loaned to West Ham United for six months, but his struggles with fitness and form led to a decision against making the move permanent.
One of the lowest points of his loan came in March when West Ham suffered a 4-3 defeat away to Newcastle United.
West Ham was leading 3-1, but after Phillips came on as a substitute, he conceded a penalty that shifted the game’s momentum.
Following the match, he was caught on camera flipping off West Ham fans who were heckling him. A fresh start with newly promoted Ipswich could be a welcome change for Phillips.
Recently, Phillips was an unused substitute in the Community Shield and was even used in defense during pre-season to get more playing time.
“He is a central midfielder, but I said many times Kalvin likes to see all the game in front of him,โ Guardiola said.
โWhen he is in the middle surrounded by players he struggles a little bit. But he helped us a lot in the last couple of games on tour. I should have seen that before. His confidence is back.โ
Guardiola previously admitted: “I know Kalvin when he gets the ball and can see all the pitch in front of him he’s a really good player. When he has the small spaces there are more problems.”
โThat’s why with the problems we have he makes an incredible effort with his position. He was confident with the ball and helps us a lot.”
