Ipswich’s manager, Kieran McKenna, has been active in the transfer market this summer, but he remains eager to strengthen his squad by adding another central defender.
In Ipswich’s Premier League opener against Liverpool, Luke Woolfenden was paired with new summer signing Jacob Greaves in central defense. While this duo managed to hold off Liverpool for nearly an hour, McKenna is still seeking to enhance his defensive options with additional depth and quality.
Ipswich currently has five central defenders available, ranging in age from 23 to 28, but their lack of Premier League experience is a concern. Of the group, only Axel Tuanzebe, formerly of Manchester United and Aston Villa, has previously appeared in the top flight. This has led McKenna to target Ahmedhodzic, who has Premier League experience from his time with Sheffield United last season.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international featured in 32 Premier League matches for Sheffield United last season, but his efforts couldn’t prevent the team from being relegated to the Championship. Ahmedhodzic’s experience and relatively young age make him an appealing option for mid-table Premier League clubs.
Wolves are also keen on Ahmedhodzic, viewing the 25-year-old as an ideal replacement for Max Kilman, who transferred to West Ham earlier in the summer. Like Ipswich, Wolves faced a tough start to the season, losing 2-0 to Arsenal, with Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera as their central defensive pairing. Wolves also have Uruguayan defender Santiago Bueno and veteran Craig Dawson as additional options.
However, Sheffield United is determined to retain Ahmedhodzic as they aim to build a squad capable of securing promotion back to the Premier League. Despite their reluctance to sell, the club is preparing for potential offers from interested parties.
Ahmedhodzic has been a key player for Sheffield United since joining in the summer of 2022 and played a crucial role in their successful 2022/23 campaign that saw them promoted to the Premier League.
While Brentford has also shown interest in the defender, they appear to be exploring other options, including Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg and Burnley’s Dara O’Shea.
