The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running, an endurance event that attracts thousands to Loch Ness annually, is evolving into a “global attraction” and enhancing the Inverness area’s global visibility.
According to the event organizers, nearly 50 countries were represented by runners last year. This year’s marathon is set to take place in Inverness and along Loch Ness’s shores on September 29, with organizers noting that spots for all races are filling up quickly, making this a final opportunity to join the scenic route.
The organizers are pleased that the event’s international appeal and growth—along with its reputation as “one of the most beautiful races in the world”—are helping it serve as a global ambassador for the region.
A spokesperson commented, “This enduring race remains a highlight of the Autumn running calendar, celebrated for its stunning scenery, vibrant atmosphere, and memorable experience.” They added, “In 2023, the event saw over 8600 runners complete the course, and its popularity is expected to continue. With participants from over 45 countries and the allure of Nessie, it’s no surprise this event is high on many bucket lists.”
The marathon’s 22nd edition will occur on September 29, starting from high in the hills on Loch Ness’s south side and finishing in Inverness, with various race distances available, including the Baxters River Ness 10K, Baxters River Ness 5K, and a Wee Nessie kids race. The Festival of Running will also start the day before, on September 28, featuring the Runners Café and Sports Expo, hosted by BBC’s Bryan Burnett and open to all visitors.
