What’s Next for Jasson Dominguez? Boone’s Comment Raises Eyebrows

After a disappointing series loss to the Washington Nationals, the New York Yankees are considering a significant shake-up to their roster.

At the center of this speculation is Jasson Dominguez, the team’s highly-touted prospect. Manager Aaron Boone recently hinted that Dominguez might be promoted to the majors as early as September, raising questions about the Yankees’ approach to lineup changes and roster management.

According to NJ Advance Media’s Max Goodman, Boone suggested that Dominguez is definitely “in the conversation” for a call-up. Boone emphasized that if Dominguez were to be promoted, it would be in a role where he could play regularly rather than sit on the bench.

This comment comes amid growing frustration with the Yankees’ underperformance and a crowded roster that includes struggling veterans like DJ LeMahieu, who, despite a subpar season with a .202 batting average and only two home runs, continues to see significant playing time over younger, potentially more promising players.

Dominguez, who has impressed with a .309/.366/.855 line, including eight home runs and 27 RBIs in the minors this year, made a splash last September before an injury curtailed his season.

Despite a rough outing during the “Little League Classic” against the Detroit Tigers, where he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, his potential remains high. The Yankees’ decision to keep Dominguez off the trading block at the deadline underscores their belief in his future impact.

Boone’s reluctance to confirm Dominguez’s promotion, when asked specifically about the September 1 roster expansion, reflects the Yankees’ cautious approach. Historically, Boone has favored veterans over rookies, even when the former are underperforming.

The outfield, in particular, is a contentious area. While Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are secured in center and right field, respectively, left fielder Alex Verdugo has struggled, posting a career-worst .234 batting average. This leaves an opportunity for Dominguez, whose skills could potentially offer a fresh and more dynamic option for the Yankees.

The Yankees’ current roster strategy, which seems to favor experience over potential, may be due for a rethink. Dominguez represents an exciting alternative to the veteran players who are failing to deliver.

Given his high ceiling and the team’s decision to keep him off the trade market, it’s clear the Yankees recognize his value. Promoting him in September could provide not only a much-needed boost but also a chance to evaluate whether he can be a long-term solution for the team’s struggles.
