Confirmed: 18-year-old in line for Europa League debut amid Rangers injury woes.
At Ibrox, Rangers manager Philippe Clement has already promised to give young players an opportunity.
Ross McCausland, Robbie Fraser, and Cole McKinnon have already been given chances by the Belgian boss, but more players are vying for Clement’s attention.
After watching the Rangers B team defeat Stenhousemuir 4-1, Philippe Clement had a lot to consider when he got to the full-time bench.
However, the Ibrox manager has been lowering expectations as one young Rangers player gets ready to play in the Europa League for the first time against FCSB.
Zak Lovelace is back in the running for the Rangers.
The Ibrox injury curse has plagued several Rangers players in recent seasons, including young attacker Zak Lovelace.
The young Northern Irishman has been left to try to regain his fitness after being given a starting position alongside Ross McCausland in a 2-0 victory over St Mirren last October.
The 18-year-old’s development has been badly impeded by two significant injuries, but it now appears like Rangers will give the youthful attacker more opportunity.
With Zak Lovelace still having a ways to go before he can be expected to make a consistent impact, Clement has moderated expectations as the excitement surrounding him grows after that performance against Stenhousemuir.
As the club’s choices are limited owing to injuries, Clement confirmed Lovelace will be in the squad for the Europa League match against Romanian team FCSB.
In order to keep him fresh for a possible debut, the teenage striker, who has not yet played in the Europa League, was hooked for forty-five minutes against Stenhousemuir.
After a string of lackluster attacking performances from their squad, Rangers supporters have also made it apparent that they want to see more of Zak Lovelace.
Ready to make his Europa League debut, Philippe Clement
According to Clement, “(Zak Lovelace) will be in the selection (v FCSB)” prior to the Europa League match.
“Zak isn’t there to keep the supporters giddy for ten straight games.
He can perform certain tasks in a different way than other team members, but there are still many areas that need improvement.
He’s only 18 or 19 years old, so that’s normal, but he has an intriguing profile for the future and possibly the near future as well.
“We agreed before to the game that the (B Team) game would go no more than 60 minutes, and we would determine at halftime whether that was 45 or 60 minutes.
“I saw enough in 45 because I want him to be benched for Thursday. If needed, we can use that kind of profile, even though we have less due to injuries.”
