Klay Thompson made an impressive debut for his new team, the Dallas Mavericks, in their regular-season opener. The Mavericks’ highly anticipated offseason acquisition took the court at the American Airlines Center on Thursday night, giving Dallas fans a taste of the skills that Golden State Warriors fans had enjoyed for years.
Klay Thompson put on a show in his Mavericks debut. Thompson even set a new franchise record in his first game with Dallas, hitting a total of six 3-pointers — the most ever by a Mavericks player in a team debut — helping secure a 120-109 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
“With 6s, Klay set a franchise record for most 3-pointers made in a Mavs debut,” posted the Mavericks’ official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Thompson finished with 22 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, and added seven rebounds, one assist, and three steals in just 26 minutes on the floor. At 34 years old, Thompson was acquired to be a major asset for the Mavs through a three-year, $50 million sign-and-trade deal with the Warriors over the summer, and he immediately demonstrated why the Mavs were eager to get him.
Last season, the Mavericks fell short of their goal, losing to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, partly due to a lack of offensive firepower to match the Celtics’ attack. With Thompson, the Mavericks now boast a strong trio of Thompson, Luka Doncic, and Kyrie Irving.
