Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt recently shared his perspective on the high expectations placed on American sprinter Noah Lyles to break his long-standing world records at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Bolt, who set the 100m and 200m world records in 2009 with times of 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds respectively at the Berlin World Championships, expressed no concern that Lyles would surpass his marks.
Reflecting on his reign at the top of sprinting, Bolt remarked, “I wasn’t worried. I can say. It’s going to take a while, but I’m always happy when it stays intact.”
Before the Olympics, the anticipation surrounding Lyles was immense, especially given his recent accomplishments. In 2023, Lyles achieved a 19.31-second time in the 200m at the World Championships, a result that bolstered fans’ hope that he could approach or even eclipse Bolt’s record.
