Shakopee to get a huge restaurant and entertainment complex next to Canterbury Park…

Shakopee is set to welcome a massive new addition to its Canterbury Park area: Boardwalk Kitchen & Bar, a sprawling restaurant and entertainment venue featuring an 18,000-square-foot patio with racetrack views, slated to open in spring 2025.

The project is the latest in a series of high-profile restaurant developments near the racetrack and casino in the south metro suburb, which has seen a surge of openings over the past 18 months.

The venue will include a 6,000-square-foot restaurant serving “classic American” dishes like wood-fired wings and steaks, a copper-topped bar offering craft cocktails, and private dining spaces. Guests can also enjoy the expansive patio with a second bar, fireplaces, and lawn games, as well as the Stable, a 7,500-square-foot live music venue featuring an LED video wall.

Designed by Doerr Architecture and Bisou Consulting, the complex incorporates elements inspired by jockeys and ginkgo trees.

Co-owner Joe Berg, who has experience with venues like the Lumber Exchange Event Center in downtown Minneapolis, is optimistic about Shakopee’s growth. “We are thrilled to be a part of that growth,” said Berg. “It’s also home to Canterbury Park, so I’ve had my eye on the community for a while.”

Berg has partnered with real estate developer Ken Sherman, investor Matt Sherman, and Thomas Pivec, the operating partner of Lord Fletcher’s dining complex on Lake Minnetonka.

The team sees Shakopee’s rapidly growing population—doubling from around 20,000 in 2000 to nearly 48,000 today, with projections exceeding 62,000 by 2040—as a prime opportunity.

The new venue will complement other nearby establishments, including Bravi’s Craft Mexican Kitchen, Badger Hill Brewing, and OG Zaza, with barbecue spot Mr. Pig Stuff set to open soon. Boardwalk Kitchen & Bar will debut in 2025 at 1125-1135 Shenandoah Drive, Shakopee.
