Cowboys Extend VP of Player Personnel Will McClay
According to Patrik Walker of the team’s official website, the Cowboys have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with vice president of player personnel Will McClay. His contract was set to expire in May, after the 2025 NFL Draft.
That collective sigh of relief? It’s Cowboys Nation realizing just how crucial McClay is to the team’s success.
McClay has been at the helm of the Cowboys’ personnel department since 2014, playing a key role in building one of the most talented rosters in the league. Many teams, including the Panthers and Commanders, have tried to lure him away, but Dallas managed to retain him. Letting him walk would have been a devastating blow to the franchise.
Since taking charge of scouting in 2014, McClay has drafted 15 Pro Bowlers and six All-Pros. His first two picks? Future Hall of Famer Zack Martin and potential Ring of Honor inductee DeMarcus Lawrence. He has also found standout players beyond the first round, including Dak Prescott, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis.
McClay’s influence cannot be overstated. While Jerry Jones holds the general manager title, McClay is the one shaping the team’s roster.
The Brian Schottenheimer era remains unpredictable, but having McClay continue leading the front office gives him the best possible support.
