In a major shakeup within the WNBA, All-Star forward Satou Sabally has been traded to the Phoenix Mercury in a three-team deal involving the Dallas Wings and the Indiana Fever, per ESPNโs Kendra Andrews.
The Phoenix Mercury will receive Sabally, while the Dallas Wings get guard Ty Harris and forward Mikiah Herbert Harrigan. Phoenix will also send veteran guard Sophie Cunningham to Indiana, along with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 draft. Meanwhile, the Indiana Fever are trading forward NaLyssa Smith and the eighth overall pick to Dallas, while the Wings will send center Kalani Brown and guard Sevgi Uzun to Phoenix.
As a result, Dallas loses Sabally, Brown, and Uzun but gains Harris, Smith, Herbert Harrigan, and the eighth overall pick in this yearโs draft. This trade marks a significant move for Sabally, who had already expressed her desire to leave Dallas weeks earlier. After being offered a core qualifying offer from the Wings, Sabally’s trade to a new team was set in motion.
Ty Harris, who was originally drafted by Dallas in 2020, struggled to earn a consistent role but thrived after being traded to the Connecticut Sun in the 2023 offseason. There, she became one of the league’s best three-point shooters, hitting 41.9% of her attempts over two seasons.
NaLyssa Smith, drafted second overall in 2022, had a strong rookie season but has struggled since then. However, with career averages of 13 points and 8 rebounds, Smith will likely have a significant role in Dallas under first-year coach Chris Koclanes.
Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, a 2023 sixth overall pick, has yet to find her footing in the WNBA. Her move to Dallas could be an opportunity to develop further, though she may only sign a non-guaranteed deal.
The Wings also acquired the eighth overall pick in the 2025 draft, which is expected to be deep, along with the No. 1 overall and No. 14 picks. This adds to Dallas’ future prospects.
Kalani Brown, who signed a three-year deal with Dallas in 2024, has two years and $261,250 remaining on her contract. Her departure opens up more cap space for the Wings in the coming seasons.
Sevgi Uzun, who played in all 40 games for Dallas last season, will be moving to Phoenix on a non-guaranteed one-year deal.
Since Sabally is a free agent, the deal can only be officially completed once free agency opens on February 1.
