Lakers Eyeing More Moves After Luka Dončić Trade, Targeting Caleb Martin to Fill Davis’ Role

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly looking to make another major move after acquiring Luka Dončić in a blockbuster trade that saw Anthony Davis leave the team. According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, an insider texted, “Everybody knows the Lakers are trying to do more even after this.” While Dončić provides a new cornerstone for the franchise, his arrival has left a significant gap in the Lakers’ frontcourt, especially in terms of defense. Davis was not only an elite scorer but also the team’s defensive anchor, crucial to their paint protection and overall versatility. Dončić and LeBron James, known more for their offensive skills, won’t be able to fill that role.

To address this, the Lakers are reportedly looking at Caleb Martin of the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Although Martin has been dealing with injuries this season, his high-energy, defensive-minded play was crucial for the Miami Heat during their 2023 NBA Finals run. The Lakers need a big man to replace Davis’ two-way impact, but adding a strong perimeter defender like Martin could also bolster their roster. However, the Lakers’ trade options may be limited, as they lack players in the $4 million to $10 million salary range, making a trade with the 76ers challenging.

The Sacramento Kings are also interested in Martin, though their trade plans are complicated by ongoing De’Aaron Fox rumors. Martin’s contract still has two guaranteed years, and despite his injuries this season, his ability to contribute on both ends makes him a valuable long-term asset. The 76ers will need to consider their future, not just the short-term return on a potential trade.

The Lakers remain active in trade talks, but their primary need is another big man. While Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes are solid contributors, neither can replicate Davis’ defensive presence. Dorian Finney-Smith and Austin Reaves offer shooting, but the Lakers could still use another shooter to complement Dončić and LeBron’s playmaking. Maxi Kleber, another player acquired in the trade, could provide defensive support but is recovering from foot surgery, leaving his availability uncertain.

As the trade deadline approaches, Lakers’ General Manager Rob Pelinka is focused on securing the pieces needed to complete a championship-contending roster. Whether it’s another defensive wing like Martin, a big man, or an additional shooter, the Lakers are clearly committed to making a strong push this season, signaling that the Dončić trade is only the beginning of their all-in approach.
