Lakers Stun Fans: Rookie Cut in Shocking Move to Sign Rising Star!

Armel Traore’s time with the Lakers has officially ended—at least for now. The 22-year-old rookie saw limited action, appearing in just nine games and averaging 1.6 points and 1.7 rebounds while shooting 31.6%. Though he showed glimpses of potential, the Lakers opted to waive him on Friday, freeing up a two-way roster spot.

Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times first broke the news, stating that the Lakers still have interest in Traore if he clears waivers and could keep him in their G League system:

“The Lakers have signed G Jordan Goodwin to a two-way deal and waived F Armel Traore. Lakers like Traore and would have interest in keeping him in the building with their G-League team if he clears waivers. Lakers have need for G depth after Christie/Reddish/Knecht trades.”

With recent roster changes—including trades involving Max Christie, Cam Reddish, and Dalton Knecht—the Lakers found themselves lacking backcourt depth, making Goodwin a logical addition. Known for his defensive energy, Goodwin fits the team’s current needs.

    Traore’s Future Remains Uncertain

Despite limited NBA playing time, Traore impressed in the G League, averaging 13.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists on 51.3% shooting over eight games. Standing at 6-foot-9 with a developing perimeter shot (34.4% from three), he remains an intriguing long-term project.

Draft analyst Rich Stayman of No Ceilings expressed confidence in Traore’s potential:

“Someone with lottery intentions should swoop up Armel Traore. I liked him a lot last summer.”

While that assessment may be ambitious—Traore is still developing and unlikely to secure a spot in an NBA rotation just yet—it highlights his raw talent. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, the Lakers are expected to retain him in South Bay for further development.

For now, his next move remains uncertain. The Lakers prioritized adding guard depth over keeping another developmental forward, underscoring the business side of the league.
