Yankees Eye Alex Verdugo as $60 Million Solution to DH Void

The New York Yankees are exploring options to fill the designated hitter role, as there’s no clear timeline for Giancarlo Stanton’s return. One possibility is bringing back a familiar $60 million player to fill the void.

While Jasson Domínguez has been mentioned as a potential DH, his performance hasn’t yet earned him that spot.

Instead, the Yankees should consider re-signing Alex Verdugo, who would be a strong addition and is familiar with playing at Yankee Stadium. Despite a less-than-ideal 2024 season—batting .233 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs—Verdugo did match his career-high in home runs.

A return for Verdugo would be a smart move for the Yankees, offering them a player who can energize the lineup and step into left field if needed, especially if the team opts to give Domínguez a shot.

Currently valued at $60 million for four years, it’s unlikely Verdugo will get a long-term contract, especially with the 2025 season starting soon. The Yankees might be able to sign him for a one-year, $9 million deal. This would address an immediate need while giving Verdugo the opportunity to prove himself before re-entering free agency in 2026. Even if Stanton returns soon, Verdugo could provide additional depth.
