DJ LeMahieu Injury Could Lead to Rare Trade Between New York Yankees and Mets for Elite Prospect

With DJ LeMahieu sidelined, the Yankees may pursue a trade with the Mets for Brett Baty, offering a potential win-win for both teams.

The New York Yankees may need to consider a rare trade with their in-city rivals, the New York Mets, following another key injury to one of their expected starters for 2025.

Heading into the new season, the Yankees are under high expectations after reaching the World Series last October. Their aim is to secure their 28th championship this fall. Despite losing Juan Soto in free agency, many believe their recent moves have improved the roster compared to 2024.

However, the Yankees still face challenges, including a concern at designated hitter. Giancarlo Stanton is battling issues with both elbows, and it’s uncertain when he will return. Third base is another position with uncertainty, as this spring, the team is facing its biggest position battle.

DJ LeMahieu, a six-year Yankees veteran, was expected to start at third base but suffered a calf injury that may keep him out for an extended period. The alternatives—Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza—are primarily utility players or defensive replacements, not everyday starters.

As a result, the Yankees may need to consider a trade with the Mets, particularly for prospect Brett Baty. Baty, who has long been a favorite of Mets scouts, has yet to translate his minor league success to the majors, and with third base occupied by Mark Vientos and Jeff McNeil at second, he’s without a clear position. This makes him an ideal candidate for the Yankees, who could benefit from his defensive skills, bat power, and untapped potential. A change of scenery might help Baty reach his potential, and if he doesn’t, the cost would be minimal. However, if he succeeds, he would provide significant value both immediately and in the long term.

To make a deal appealing to the Mets, the Yankees have two possible routes: they could offer Marcus Stroman, a player the Mets are looking to move, to help fill their pitching void and assume most of his contract. Alternatively, the Yankees could offer lower-level prospects to bolster the Mets’ farm system.
