Lions Retain Key Special Teams Players
On Friday, the Lions finalized a three-year deal with Derrick Barnes and a one-year contract with Pittman. Additionally, the team secured Turner on a one-year deal, as reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Turner initially joined Detroit midway through the 2024 season and quickly became a crucial part of the special teams unit. Over the past seven seasons, he has built a reputation as a reliable contributor in that role. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp was vocal about his confidence in Turner, stating, “He’s super smart and intelligent, I got a lot of confidence and faith and trust in him already in a very short period of time.” Fipp also revealed that Arizona’s special teams coach praised Turner, saying, “I don’t know if I trust another guy more than I trust him.”
Turner’s Impact on Special Teams and Defense
During his nine appearances with the Lions, Turner played 176 special teams snaps. Though primarily a special teams asset, he also stepped in on defense when needed. While he faced some challenges, he delivered one of the team’s most crucial plays of the season—tracking down Packers quarterback Jordan Love to force a field goal attempt late in the game, which ultimately led to a Detroit victory.
Pittman’s Continued Role in the Linebacker Rotation
Anthony Pittman, another special teams contributor, returns for another season after signing a one-year contract. Pittman has been with the Lions since 2019 and has carved out a consistent role as a depth linebacker and key special teamer.
