Should the Mavericks Risk Anthony Davis’ Return? The Case For and Against His Comeback

Anthony Davis might soon return to the Dallas Mavericks, as he and point guard Jaden Hardy were assigned to the Texas Legends, the team’s G League affiliate, on Monday morning. They were recalled later that afternoon, allowing them to participate in a five-on-five scrimmage—a crucial step in returning to play. The Mavericks, dealing with numerous injuries, had only eight players available for Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, limiting their practice opportunities. Davis has been out since February 8 due to a left adductor strain, while Hardy has missed seven games since his right ankle injury on March 3.

    Pros of Davis’ Return:

    1. Enhanced Playoff Prospects: The Mavericks (33-36) have struggled without Davis, going 5-11 since his injury and 1-6 after Kyrie Irving’s season-ending ACL tear. Despite this, they still hold the 10th seed in the Western Conference. Davis’s return could help secure their playoff spot and possibly overtake the ninth-seeded Sacramento Kings (33-33) for a home Play-In game.

    2. Building Team Chemistry: Returning now would allow Davis to develop on-court relationships with key players like Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Naji Marshall, all under contract for next season. This head start could be beneficial for offseason preparations.

    3. Reengaging the Fanbase: Fans have endured a tough season, especially after the controversial trade of Luka Doncic. Seeing Davis back in action could boost morale and provide a positive distraction as the team aims to finish the season strong.

    Cons of Davis’ Return:

    1. Risk of Reinjury: There’s a concern that returning too soon could lead to reaggravating the adductor strain or incurring a new injury. P.J. Washington, who recently returned from a seven-game absence due to a reaggravated ankle sprain, acknowledged he might have come back too early.

    2. Challenging Playoff Outlook: Even if the Mavericks secure the eighth seed, they would likely face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. Given the current roster’s limitations, especially without Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, advancing past the first round seems improbable.

    3. Focusing on the Future: Missing the playoffs could result in a higher first-round pick in a deep draft class, offering a chance to strengthen the roster for next season.

Balancing the immediate benefits of Davis’s return against potential long-term risks is crucial for the Mavericks as they navigate the remainder of the season.
