Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez took responsibility for the injury scare involving Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards during Thursday night’s 105-90 loss to the Timberwolves.
“I was out of bounds trying to move out of the way,” Fernandez admitted. “I definitely have to be faster than that. Players’ health is the most important thing in the game, so next time I just have to move faster.”
Edwards, who finished with 28 points and five rebounds, avoided a serious injury despite briefly leaving the game. The incident occurred late in the second quarter when he stepped back onto Fernandez’s foot while making a three-pointer. He was helped off the court but returned for the second half.
The Timberwolves are in a tight race to secure a top-six spot in the Western Conference and avoid the play-in tournament. Losing Edwards would be a major setback, as the three-time All-Star has been the team’s driving force this season following Karl-Anthony Towns’ trade to the New York Knicks. Before Thursday’s game, Edwards was averaging a career-high 27.3 points per game.
