The New York Yankees’ infield just got a dramatic shake-up, and not in a way fans would’ve hoped. As DJ LeMahieu works his way back from injury in the minors, the Yankees were cautiously optimistic about their depth.
But Tuesday’s game threw everything into disarray. Jazz Chisholm Jr., a key presence on the field and in the lineup, exited the game after a seemingly routine swing and subsequent triple in the first inning. That moment could have serious ripple effects on the roster, potentially thrusting LeMahieu into an essential role far earlier than planned.
The incident happened early in the game, and video showed Chisholm grimacing after his swing. Although he legged out a triple, he quickly exited the game. The team later labeled the injury as “right flank discomfort,” but for the Yankees—who are already managing a thin infield group—the timing couldn’t be worse.
LeMahieu, sidelined for much of spring training due to an injury during one of his first at-bats, has only recently begun to look like a viable option again. He’s been productive during his rehab stint, going 6-for-10 at Double-A Somerset while playing second base. What once felt like a complicated roster situation now looks like an emergency solution.
Earlier in the season, fans expressed concern over the possibility of LeMahieu being gifted a starting role. However, his injury removed that issue from the table, giving others—like Anthony Volpe, Oswaldo Cabrera, and newcomer Chisholm—a chance to secure everyday roles. But now, with Chisholm possibly sidelined, the Yankees may have to accelerate LeMahieu’s return regardless of long-term readiness.
This wasn’t the way the team envisioned reintroducing LeMahieu to the big-league mix. If Chisholm’s absence stretches into weeks, the Yankees will be forced to rely on LeMahieu not as a bench option, but as a crucial starter. “Uh oh,” summed up the mood of many Yankees fans on social media.
Yankee fans can only hope Chisholm’s issue is minor. If not, the team’s already fragile infield depth is about to face a serious test.
