Amid growing excitement over Jonathan Mingo’s potential with the Dallas Cowboys, an insider has lifted the veil on the real reason the team is so focused on him. The Cowboys, who made a trade for Mingo in the offseason, have been quick to tout his potential, but according to Mike Fisher, there’s a reason behind the hype — and it’s not because of his proven success.
The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to bring Mingo into the fold last year. However, the former Ole Miss star hasn’t delivered on the expectations many had hoped for, registering only 60 receptions for 585 yards in two seasons. Still, as the team faces a pressing need for a reliable No. 2 receiver next to CeeDee Lamb, the Cowboys are eager to talk up Mingo’s upside. Stephen Jones, Cowboys’ executive vice president, recently praised Mingo’s potential during the offseason, stating that he could develop into a solid No. 2 receiver.
“I like our room,” Jones said earlier in the offseason. “We added Jonathan Mingo late in the year last year, and I think him having a full offseason to work with Dak [Prescott]… we really liked him when he came out of Ole Miss. I really feel like he has a lot of upside.” While the optimism is apparent, the reality is that Mingo has yet to prove himself as a reliable weapon in the NFL.
Mike Fisher weighs in with a more cautious perspective. Fisher suggests that the Cowboys’ constant praise of Mingo is more about justifying their trade than actual confidence in his abilities. “This organization keeps talking about Jonathan Mingo, and part of the reason they talk about him is because they want to be right [about the trade],” Fisher said. “He’s never done it.”
Even though Fisher acknowledges that Mingo could still develop into a contributor, he points out that right now, the young receiver is far from being the No. 2 target Dak Prescott needs. Mingo may yet surprise fans, but until he does, it remains to be seen whether he can truly meet the Cowboys’ expectations and deliver the results needed for the 2025 season.
