Arsenal fans are buzzing as Viktor Gyokeres edges closer to a blockbuster Premier League move — but the Swedish striker is keeping his cards close to his chest. Amid intensifying transfer speculation, the Sporting CP forward addressed rumours of a summer switch to Arsenal with a cryptic response, telling teammates: “I’m not a fortune teller.”
The Gunners are on the hunt for a prolific No. 9 following a frustrating campaign where injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz left manager Mikel Arteta improvising with makeshift options. Midfielder Mikel Merino was even deployed as an emergency striker during the crucial title run-in, as Arsenal faltered behind Liverpool and Manchester City in both the Premier League and Champions League.
With goalscoring reinforcements now a priority, Gyokeres has emerged as the top target ahead of the summer window. According to multiple reports, including Football365 and leading insider Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are preparing to launch an official bid after Sporting’s final game of the season — the Taca de Portugal final against Benfica. One report even claims the deal “will become official next week.”
Teammates at Sporting are well aware of the growing rumours. Speaking to Canal 11, Pedro Goncalves revealed: “I asked him and we all asked him. He says he’s not a fortune teller. We still have the Portuguese Cup against Benfica to play.”
The Swedish international, who joined Sporting from Coventry City, has significantly improved under manager Rúben Amorim. Goncalves noted, “I feel like he’s evolved a lot since he arrived. There are training sessions where it seems like he’s holding back.”
With 43 goal contributions in all competitions this season, Gyokeres has proven he’s ready for a bigger stage. Arsenal are reportedly willing to meet his €100m release clause, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history.
Sporting, having already secured the Liga Portugal title, are now focused on completing a domestic double in the cup final. Goncalves added, “We’ll control what we can… it’s always a 50/50 game. But we want the double — it’s something Sporting fans really want.”
As the clock ticks down to the cup final, all eyes are on Gyokeres. Will he end his time in Lisbon with silverware — and begin a new chapter in North London?
