The upcoming NBA free-agent class is generally considered underwhelming. Several big names, such as LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Julius Randle, and James Harden, are expected to remain with their current teams. Meanwhile, the more intriguing younger players—like Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey—are restricted free agents, making them tough to sign.
“You’re mostly looking at role players,” said one general manager. “The real action will be with trades, but if you have free-agent money to spend, you’re probably going to get a rotation guy for your bench.”
Among the top candidates for such a bench role is 3-and-D guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker. He averaged 9.8 points and hit 38.1% from beyond the arc in 25.3 minutes per game during the West Finals. His mix of shooting and defense resulted in a plus-3.5 on-off rating, one of the best on the Timberwolves.
The timing is ideal for Alexander-Walker to enter free agency, and if any team is favored to sign him, the Lakers appear to be the frontrunner. Offshore sportsbook Bovada currently lists the Lakers at plus-235 odds to land him.
However, that might not be the wisest wager. Though the Lakers could have the full $14 million mid-level exception available this summer—which should be enough to sign Alexander-Walker—their priority is expected to be acquiring a big man. They might pursue a center through a trade while still adding a wing like Alexander-Walker, but signing a center without giving up assets remains Plan A.
Competition for Alexander-Walker is expected, with veteran reporter Marc Stein noting Orlando as a potential top suitor. Stein wrote, “Alexander-Walker is bound to generate the most significant external interest of the three especially coming off a season in which he earned just $4.3 million. Next season’s full midlevel exception will be worth more than three times what Alexander-Walker made last season at $14.1 million … with rumbles already in circulation that Orlando is a team to watch as a potential suitor.”
While the Lakers may be the favorite, caution is advised.
