Just forty-five minutes after confirming the departure of longtime boss Chris Wilder, the Blades wasted no time announcing his bold replacement — Ruben Selles.

Selles, the Spanish tactician known for his data-driven approach and steely demeanor, has barely been out of work after parting ways with Hull City a few weeks ago. Despite keeping Hull in the Championship on the final day of the season, the club decided not to extend his contract. We must embrace statistics and new technologies, but we must never lose sight of the fundamentals of football. Using all of the resources at our disposal, I believe we can maximise our performance and produce a quality model.
Our identity is always very clear. We want to be forceful and force things to happen. Fans should therefore anticipate a team that will not wait or be reactive; rather, we will take the initiative and go out and strive to be as competitive as we can in each and every game.”
That aggressive, forward-thinking mentality could be exactly what the Blades need after a season that ended in heartbreak. Under Chris Wilder, United fought hard to bounce back to the top flight, finishing third in the Championship. Despite overcoming Bristol City in the playoff semi-final, their dream collapsed at the final hurdle, losing to Sunderland after a crushing late goal from Tommy Watson.
For Wilder, a proud Sheffield native and beloved figure among fans, the exit was emotional. He addressed supporters with heartfelt words:
