According to sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers made a daring attempt to acquire Kevin Durant by offering star guard Darius Garland in a high-stakes proposal.
In the high-risk, high-reward arena of NBA trades, boldness often defines ambition. The Cavaliers embodied that mindset in their pursuit of Kevin Durant. “According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor,” Cleveland engaged in discussions with the Phoenix Suns and offered Garland—one of their brightest young stars—in the package.
Garland, the centerpiece of Cleveland’s resurgence, was an unexpected name to be placed on the trade table. A former first-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2019, he’s evolved into an All-Star known for his smooth scoring and playmaking. His inclusion in the talks stunned many and reflected a franchise no longer content with the status quo. “They were ready to go big or go home.”
Durant had already been the subject of multiple trade rumors ever since Phoenix began its rebuild. Although the Suns ultimately accepted a substantial offer from the Houston Rockets—receiving Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, a top-ten 2025 pick, and multiple second-rounders—Cleveland’s pitch came first and packed serious intent. Including Garland made financial and basketball sense for a team eager to transform into a legitimate title contender.
But Phoenix passed. Despite Garland being under a lucrative long-term deal—five years, $197.2 million through 2028, with a $39.4 million base salary in 2025-26—the Suns opted for a return with more immediate value and less risk. From their perspective, Cleveland’s gamble lacked sufficient assurance.
The failed trade attempt, however, says a lot about Cleveland’s evolving philosophy. Rather than quietly maneuver behind the scenes, they made a bold, public move for a generational talent. It was a signal that the Cavaliers see their moment as now.
Still, Garland remains at the center of their plans. Last season, he averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists, earning a second All-Star selection. His chemistry with Donovan Mitchell helped the Cavs to an impressive 64-win season. But pairing him with Durant could have pushed the team into true championship contention, creating a superteam capable of rivaling the league’s best.
Had the deal gone through, Durant’s experience and elite scoring would have perfectly complemented Mitchell’s explosiveness, making Cleveland a top-tier force. Instead, with Durant now in Houston, the Cavaliers must decide their next move.
They retain a strong core—Garland, Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen—as well as cap space and assets. Whether they double down on development or make another play for a superstar remains to be seen.
What’s clear is this: Garland’s role is more critical than ever. If the Cavs stay committed to him, the Durant talks may be remembered as a bold prelude, not a misstep. But should he be moved in the future, this offer could come to symbolize a shift in belief.
One thing is certain—Cleveland isn’t shying away from chasing greatness. The rest of the NBA is paying attention.
