Amorim Could Part Ways with “Leader” in Bid to Secure Premier League Winger: Opinion

Manchester United remain keen on securing the signature of Viktor Gyokeres this summer. While Jadon Sancho’s wage demands have ruled out a move to Serie A, and Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona dream now looks to be no more than a potential loan, Alejandro Garnacho doesn’t appear to be leaving Old Trafford anytime soon either.

Why Manchester United Should Consider Offering Harry Maguire in a Swap for Mohammed Kudus

Harry Maguire’s time at United has never lacked drama. Despite several managers writing him off, the England international has repeatedly found his way back into the team.

Now entering the final year of his contract, United may be looking for ways to move on the 32-year-old—and a swap deal might offer the right solution.

With United thin in attacking options and several forwards not in the club’s long-term plans, West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus—linked with a summer exit—could be an ideal fit.

The Hammers have already lost a few senior players, and Maguire could benefit from a fresh chapter at a club that previously tried to sign him. That failed 2023 transfer, when Maguire was benched, reportedly frustrated him—but as always, he put his head down and worked harder.

Given Kudus’ age (24), United would likely need to include a fee in any deal, but it wouldn’t be excessive. Offloading a high-earning player with limited time left on his contract might be good business.

Is It Time for Maguire to Move On?

Rúben Amorim is the latest manager to recognize Maguire’s importance, with the centre-back becoming a pivotal figure in United’s back three. His defensive organisation and ball-playing ability remain valued both domestically and in Europe.

Back in January, Amorim told BBC Sport:

    > “I feel he is a leader again. He feels more like an important player in the team.
He believes in himself a lot and he’s doing a great job.
We have to praise Harry more than me. He was sick before the last game and was dead in the end. That is what I want from every player.
He’s really good with the ball in that position.
You can also see in this league it is really important to be good in set-pieces and when we are defending low, there are a lot of crosses. Arsenal did a lot of crosses with Harry and we controlled that area.”

Considering the ups and downs he’s faced, it’s surprising Maguire hasn’t made a move sooner. He values playing at Old Trafford and respects the club’s stature—something more players could learn from.
