The Wizards Might Be Sleeping on the 3 Most Dangerous Names Still on the Board

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 10: Jonathan Kuminga #00 of the Golden State Warriors dunks the ball against the Minnesota Timberwolves during the second quarter in Game Three of the Western Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Chase Center on May 10, 2025 in San Francisco, California. NBA free agency has largely settled, with only lesser-known names like Al Horford or Amir Coffey still floating around. However, three intriguing young restricted free agents remain unsigned—Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga, and Cam Thomas—weeks after becoming eligible to negotiate with their current teams.

While the Wizards have pulled off a few smart trades this offseason, they’ve remained almost silent on the free agency front. Could that change if they consider going after one of these three?

Josh Giddey – High Upside, Big Risk

Former No. 6 pick Josh Giddey, recently traded from Oklahoma City to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Alex Caruso, continues to raise questions about his long-term value. Giddey’s a gifted passer and fills the box score with ease, but his shooting inconsistencies and defensive weaknesses limit his ceiling.

“Giddey is talented and is quite a fun watch with his crafty playmaking ability, but he has a shaky outside shot and is a negative defender.”

According to reports, Giddey is targeting a deal worth around $30 million per year. Unless his negotiations with Chicago completely fall apart, the Wizards may be better off avoiding the bidding war. He could be a decent value if available for closer to $20 million annually.

    Jonathan Kuminga – Untapped Potential

Taken directly after Giddey in the 2021 NBA Draft, Jonathan Kuminga is another high-upside player with notable flaws. His inconsistent focus and poor decision-making have frustrated the Warriors, who appear unsure of what to do with him.

“The Warriors have made clear they are not fans of Kuminga, yet they do not want to lose the asset for nothing.”

That leaves the door open for a potential sign-and-trade, where Washington could swoop in and acquire a freakishly athletic forward who just dropped 21 points per game in a playoff series against Minnesota. If the price is low enough, Kuminga might be worth the gamble.

    Cam Thomas – One-Dimensional Scorer

The Wizards should steer clear of Cam Thomas. While he can score in bunches, Thomas doesn’t bring anything else—no playmaking, no defense, and little effort off the ball.

“There’s only one basketball on the court at all times, and the Wizards should prioritize getting shots to guys like Tre Johnson and Bub Carrington.”

Washington already has volume scorers like Cam Whitmore, and duplicating that skill set could harm development across the roster.

While these three players haven’t signed new deals yet—mostly due to restricted free agency and market hesitation—they’re unlikely to leave their current teams without a serious offer. That said, if there’s any player worth taking a shot on, it’s Kuminga.

“The Wizards should at least throw some cash at Jonathan Kuminga and see if they can lure him out of the Bay.”.
