Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles has made it clear he wants to keep Gustavo Hamer at Bramall Lane, despite growing interest from European clubs — most recently Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who wore the captain’s armband during the first half of United’s 5–0 friendly win over Rotherham, has drawn attention following an impressive campaign that earned him the Championship Player of the Year award.
Selles addressed the swirling transfer rumors during his post-match media duties:
“I don’t manage those things,” he said. “But I want to keep Gustavo with me, with us, with the club. He’s been fantastic… the way he plays, his quality. That’s always going to be our line. We know the market is fluid, but my main target is to keep him.”
Hamer, who previously attracted interest from Leeds United and Everton, remains committed to the club for now. According to sources, he is comfortable living in Sheffield and is not agitating for a move — though ambitions of reaching the Dutch national team remain a long-term goal.
On giving Hamer the armband, Selles explained:
> “He is one of the most important players… and in terms of players managing themselves, he becomes one of the leaders in the dressing room. So that’s not been a difficult decision.”
Selles also confirmed that Jack Robinson will retain the captaincy heading into the new season.
Elsewhere, the manager addressed speculation surrounding other key names, including goalkeeper Michael Cooper — who missed the Rotherham clash — and Anel Ahmedhodzic, whose current deal runs out in less than a year.
