Mets Shake-Up: Top Prospect Brett Baty to Replace Struggling Jeff McNeil at Second Base?

The New York Mets might be contemplating a position change for one of their prominent prospects as a strategic move to replace Jeff McNeil at second base. This internal adjustment could be pivotal for the Mets as they strive to improve their standing in the National League.

Mets’ Current Form and Playoff Hopes

As the MLB games unfold today, the Mets are showing a resurgence, having won four of their last five games. While catching the Phillies and closing a 15.5-game gap in the division seems improbable, the Mets are only three games behind in the race for the final Wild Card spot. This gap, while challenging, is not insurmountable. To capitalize on this opportunity, the Mets need consistent and improved performances from their key players.

    Jeff McNeil’s Struggles

A significant part of this turnaround hinges on Jeff McNeil, a two-time All-Star and the 2022 batting champion. Unfortunately, McNeil is experiencing a downturn, with career lows in major hitting categories this season. His defensive efforts at second base have not compensated for his decline at the plate, putting a strain on the team’s overall performance. Consequently, there have been ongoing discussions about finding a long-term replacement for the 32-year-old McNeil. However, trading him before the July 30 deadline is complicated by the more than $30 million guaranteed in his contract, and acquiring another high-salary player for second base doesn’t align with the Mets’ financial strategy.

    Potential Replacement: Brett Baty

In light of these challenges, the Mets are exploring an intriguing internal option to potentially replace McNeil both this season and in the future. Recently, SNY reported that Brett Baty, traditionally a third baseman, played second base for the first time in his career during a game for the Mets’ Syracuse Triple-A affiliate. Baty, known as an elite third-base prospect, has struggled to meet expectations during his major league stints. However, his solid defensive skills suggest that a move to a less demanding position like second base could enhance his value.

    Baty’s Performance

Though not a significant upgrade, Baty’s offensive performance has been marginally better than McNeil’s this season. Transitioning Baty to second base could provide the Mets with a viable alternative and a fresh start for the young prospect. This move could also alleviate some of the financial pressure and align with the team’s long-term strategic goals.
