Oft-Injured Mets Reliever Heads Back To The Injured List

The New York Mets’ bullpen has delivered impressive performances in June following a challenging May.

However, the bullpen will face a setback as right-hander Sean Reid-Foley has been placed on the injured list due to a right shoulder impingement. To compensate, the Mets are recalling left-hander Danny Young from Triple-A Syracuse.

Reid-Foley was quietly having a great season pitching predominately in low-leverage situations. Overall, the right-hander has thrown 21 2/3 innings in 23 games while posting a 1.66 ERA (233 ERA+). However, he did not look quite right in his last outing on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers.

New York Mets Place Sean Reid-Foley on the Injured List, Recall Danny Young From Triple-A

The 28-year-old was having a good season thanks to solid Whiff and Strikeout rates. Plus, his Ground Ball and Barrel percentages would rank tops in the majors if he had enough innings to qualify. With New York firmly back into the postseason picture, Reid-Foley could have earned more high-leverage innings as the season went on if he stayed healthy.

The team did not provide a timetable regarding a return to action for the right hander. However, the Mets placed Reid-Foley on the injured list with a shoulder impingement in late March and he missed just over three weeks.

The Mets were clearly monitoring his usage this year and will likely take his latest rehab slowly. Reid-Foley has only pitched on back-to-back days just twice this season, once in late April and again last week. His innings total this season is already higher than what he accumulated in 2022-23 combined and is his highest total since 2019.

Whether this shoulder impingement is serious or not, the Mets placing Reid-Foley on the injured list could represent a blessing in disguise. Nobody wants injures, but this can help the Mets control/limit the workload of an oft-injured but valuable arm.

    Danny Young

With Reid-Foley on the injured list, the Mets recalled Young just over a week after demoting him. It should be noted that Young’s demotion related to a roster numbers crunch, not performance based. The lefty has excelled in the majors this season, albeit in a small sample.

In nine games, the 30-year-old allowed one run in nine innings (1.00 ERA, 3.98 ERA+) with 12 strikeouts and four walks. The southpaw has also pitched well against both righties and lefties. With Jake Diekman providing rocky production as the main lefty reliever, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Young pitch in high leverage situations and earn a permanent spot in the bullpen.
