According to Noa Dalzell of CLNS Media, the Celtics have once again sent rookie shooting guard Baylor Scheierman to the Maine Celtics (formerly the Maine Red Claws) ahead of their matchup with the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
After winning the league’s best record and the championship last year, Boston selected Scheierman with the 30th overall pick following his All-American Third Team honors at Creighton.
Scheierman has been performing well with the Maine Celtics, showcasing his ability in late-game situations. Through 22 combined Tip-Off Tournament and regular-season games with Maine this season, heโs averaging 19.4 points with shooting splits of .420/.369/.833, 6.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
With a loaded roster in Boston, where even emerging star Jaden Springer struggles to secure consistent playing time, Scheiermanโs opportunity for significant minutes is limited. As a result, he essentially functions as a fourth two-way player.
The 6-foot-6 swingman, 24, has appeared in just nine games with Boston, averaging 1.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.0 minutes per game.
Bostonโs president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, recognized Scheierman as a developmental player when he drafted him last summer. His shooting potential remains appealing.
The Celtics currently sit at a 32-15 record, ranking as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, 5.5 games behind the 37-9 Cleveland Cavaliers for the top spot. They hold a slim one-game lead over the 31-16 New York Knicks, hoping to avoid dropping to the third seed and potentially losing home-court advantage in a second-round matchup.
Led by six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum and three-time All-Star Jaylen Brown (who is in contention for a fourth All-Star selection this season), the Celticsโ roster remains stacked with impressive two-way players.
