Dallas Cowboys head coach and offensive play-caller Brian Schottenheimer has made it clear that he prioritizes the running game in 2025.
After spending half the season in a running back committee, Rico Dowdle thrived when given the lead role, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards. Schottenheimer’s past tenure as Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator (2018-2020) further highlights his commitment to the ground game—Seattle ranked in the top 10 in scoring, second in rush attempts, and first in rushing yards in 2018, followed by top-five rankings in attempts and yards in 2019.
With the Cowboys holding the No. 12 pick in the draft and multiple roster gaps to address, NFL.com has projected Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty as a potential selection.
“After watching the ground game flounder without an elite running back in the backfield, Jerry Jones adds a bona fide star in Jeanty to spark an offensive resurgence,” writes NFL.com.
Given the impact that stars like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry have had on their teams, the Cowboys could turn to Jeanty to revitalize their rushing attack.
Is Jeanty “The Next Saquon”?
While Dallas also needs another wide receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb, along with defensive line help, Schottenheimer’s emphasis on the run game could make Jeanty a first-round target. If not, alternatives like North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton or Arizona State’s Cameron Skattebo may be considered in later rounds.
One thing is certain: the Cowboys aim to significantly improve their rushing attack in 2025, and the draft could play a crucial role in making that happen.
