The Cowboys conducted a virtual interview on Friday with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, marking the initial step in their search for a replacement for former head coach Mike McCarthy.
Moore previously served as Dallas franchise quarterback Dak Prescott’s play-caller from 2019 to 2022, which overlapped with the first three years of McCarthy’s tenure. When Moore left for the Chargers in 2023, McCarthy assumed the role of offensive play-caller. This week, McCarthy and the Cowboys officially parted ways.
Before transitioning to coaching, Moore was a backup quarterback behind Prescott in 2017 and became his position coach the following year. As the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, Moore oversaw an offense that highlighted Saquon Barkley, who became just the ninth running back in NFL history to achieve 2,000 rushing yards in a season. The Eagles are set to face the Rams in the divisional round on Sunday.
Next, the Cowboys plan to interview former NFL head coaches Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier. Saleh, fired by the Jets after five games in his fourth season in 2024, is among the candidates, as is Frazier, who currently serves as the Seahawks’ assistant head coach and previously coached the Vikings for over three years.
Additionally, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has held informal discussions with Colorado coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. A key player in the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl victory in 1995, Sanders spent five seasons with the team.
Jason Witten, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end and record-holder for the Cowboys, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. Since retiring for a second time after the 2020 season, Witten has been coaching at a private school in the Dallas area.
