Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is expected to miss the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Bolton, paving the way for 16-year-old rookie Jack Porter to make his debut.
Raya has been outstanding this season, instrumental in victories over Wolves, Aston Villa, and Tottenham with crucial saves. He also made an incredible double save to secure a point against Atalanta in the Champions League last week and starred in the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
After the match, Raya was seen hobbling in the mixed zone at the Etihad Stadium with a bandage on his right knee.
The Athletic reports that Arsenal will not take any chances with their No. 1 tonight, although he may be available for Saturday’s home game against Leicester City. With experienced backup Neto cup-tied and summer signing Tommy Setford injured, Arsenal finds itself in an unusual position.
Jack Porter, who just turned 16 two months ago, recently signed a scholarship with Arsenal.
He shared his excitement on Instagram, saying, “Dream come true, delighted to sign for this amazing football club with such great history. Hard work carries on.” So far, Porter has played six matches for Arsenal U18s, keeping one clean sheet and conceding 12 goals.
Fortunately for manager Mikel Arteta, news that Raya’s injury is not serious is a welcome relief, especially as the team has dealt with other key absences this season.
Declan Rice missed the north London derby due to suspension, while Mikel Merino has yet to debut after injuring his shoulder in training. Oleksandr Zinchenko will be out for at least two more weeks with a calf injury, but there is more hopeful news regarding Martin รdegaard.
After injuring his ankle ligaments during Norway’s match against Austria, Arteta expressed cautious optimism, saying, “We might get a surprise but I think itโs unlikely.”
