Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns has just landed the biggest contract extension the NBA has ever seen. As reported by ESPN, Booker signed a two-year, $145 million maximum extension with the Suns, setting a new league record with an average annual salary of $72.5 million.

This deal was announced just days after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was both the NBA and Finals MVP this year, signed a five-year, $285 million supermax extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, bringing his annual earnings to $71.25 million.

The Suns officially announced the extension on July 10, stating they’ve re-signed their all-time leading scorer. Booker shared his excitement in a heartfelt message:

“This moment means so much to me and my family,” said Booker. “Ten years ago, my NBA dreams became a reality when I was drafted here, and Phoenix is my home. I love this city and am proud of what we have accomplished over the past decade. I am grateful to Mat Ishbia and the entire Phoenix Suns organization for the partnership. Thank you, fans, for your loyalty and support. More to come!!”

Booker’s extension comes despite a disappointing season for Phoenix, in which the team missed the playoffs and ended with a 36-46 record, placing 11th in the Western Conference. The Suns last appeared in the NBA Finals in 2021, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The team recently made headlines again by trading Kevin Durant, Booker’s former teammate, to the Houston Rockets as part of a seven-team deal.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia spoke highly of Booker, saying:

“Devin Booker is the embodiment of the Phoenix Suns, representing the best of our organization, our community and our future. As the team’s all-time leading scorer, his on-court achievements are unparalleled and the result of his relentless preparation and unwavering pursuit of excellence. His character, leadership and ‘I’ll do it’ mentality define the standards and culture we uphold. Moreover, his connection with our fans is unique – his impact resonates across the Valley, and his tireless efforts in supporting Arizona’s youth and families reflect the deep community bond we cherish.”
