“I think people are forgetting something.”
That’s how Jahlil Williams opens his case for why the Spurs are being wildly underestimated heading into the 2025–26 NBA season.
The more you look at what GM Brian Wright has quietly built in San Antonio, the more it starts to feel like this team is ready to take a massive leap. And of course, it all starts with the unicorn — Victor Wembanyama.
Wemby is fully cleared to resume all basketball activities, and you already know he’ll be locked in this summer. “Knowing what we do about the towering Frenchman, he’ll be in the lab religiously,” Williams writes.
Just last week, sportsbooks set the Spurs’ win total at 43.5 games, and while that may sound reasonable on the surface, Williams argues that it’s way too low.
Here’s Exhibit A:
“Since a lot of y’all have AMNESIA about Victor Wembanyama’s 24/25 season. The dude was on track to be a consensus 1st Team All-NBA player and win DPOY because he was playing like a TOP 5 PLAYER.”

That’s not hyperbole. Wemby improved nearly every statistical category in his second season — bumping his scoring to 24 PPG, increasing his 3PT% to 35%, and still swatting four blocks a night.
Now imagine a third-year leap where he hits 27 points on 50% shooting, pushes that 3PT% to 38%, and still anchors the defense. That’s never been done in NBA history with that combination of scoring and shot-blocking.
Williams adds: “The funny part about that scenario is that the field goal efficiency is a humble number… That could certainly be coming as he adds more weight and muscle.”
And if that wasn’t enough to terrify the rest of the league — don’t forget De’Aaron Fox is healthy, ready to run alongside him. The reigning Rookie of the Year is also returning, hungrier than ever. Last season’s disappointing 34-win record wasn’t a reflection of the team’s ceiling. Fox’s injury, Wemby’s health scare (deep vein thrombosis), and some shaky moments under Coach Popovich cost them wins.
Now? The Spurs have depth, shooting, defensive flexibility, and exciting rookies.
“This team is being massively slept on, and they’re going to shock the NBA when the ball tips off in October.”
