Gabby Thomas recently shared one of the most cringe-worthy routines she follows before every race, including during her Olympic triumph in Paris.
She admitted that doing burpees, a full-body exercise that combines squats, push-ups, and jumps, is not only embarrassing but also essential for managing her heart rate. Despite her discomfort with the exercise, Thomas believes it’s effective for preparing her body and helping her run more efficiently.
The triple Olympic champion explained how this routine contributes to her performance, allowing her to stay focused on the race. “I need to keep my heart rate up. It is really embarrassing, but clearly works,” said Thomas, who went on to win the 200m gold at the Paris Olympics. Her victory came as a surprise, as she wasn’t aware that she was leading until crossing the finish line, beating a strong field that included Olympic 100m champion, Julien Alfred.
Reflecting on the moment, Thomas shared, “It’s the most bizarre feeling when you get into a flow and you get into that kind of energy where nothing matters but the finish line.” She added, “I did not expect to feel how I felt when I crossed that line. You prepare for this moment, and you train so hard for this moment, when it actually comes, it’s indescribable, and I couldn’t believe it.”
Her coach, Tonja Buford-Bailey, who had confidence in Thomas’ victory, noted that she recognized Thomas would win once she passed the 80m mark. Buford-Bailey praised the Olympic champion for balancing fun with serious training, allowing her to reach new heights.
