Gary Lineker discusses Celtic’s impressive performance in the Champions League, expressing optimism about their potential progression.
Micah Richards and Lineker both weighed in on Celtic’s dominant victory over Slovan Bratislava, with Lineker sharing his thoughts on whether they can reach the knockout stages.
The Hoops delivered an electrifying performance at Parkhead, scoring five goals with contributions from multiple players. After the first matchday, Celtic sits second in their group, earning accolades from analysts.
Richards praised Celtic striker Kyogo following the win, and Lineker added his perspective on their performance during a recent podcast episode. He remarked, โWhen we talk about amazing and thrilling football, how about Celtic scoring five goals? You would say that they will now face teams that they can defeat, and I would guess that they will be among the favorites to make it to the (knockout) round this year.โ
Lineker also mentioned the play-off format, noting that the teams ranked eighth to twenty-fourth will compete for a spot in the final sixteen, saying, โIt will be intriguing to observe… There is more football for the players, which is the only drawback to that. However, a fantastic victory for Celtic.โ
Richards, reflecting on Celtic’s historical struggles in the group stage, acknowledged the new Champions League format could benefit them. He stated, โYou know what, everyone talks about this new Champions League format… Even though it wasnโt the best game ever, it was more of a showpiece. Can we qualify for the Europa League by placing third?โ
Nonetheless, he agreed with Lineker that the new structure could make it easier for Celtic to progress in the competition.
