They Met at Duke University
Allen and Reid first crossed paths while attending Duke University, where they both played for the school’s championship-winning teams—Allen on the basketball team and Reid on the soccer team. Growing up in Cary, N.C., Reid was a longtime Duke fan. In a 2014 Duke athletics interview, she mentioned her love for basketball, which made it fitting that she later met Allen. Though they met during their freshman year, they only started dating in their senior year.
“We were best friends since freshman year, and I had this feeling that you might have liked me,” Reid said in a 2022 Whistle Sports interview. She added that their first kiss happened in her apartment during senior year.
She Had a Promising Soccer Career Before Injury Ended It
Reid excelled in soccer from high school through college. At Duke, she played in 18 games as a freshman and 26 games as a senior. After graduating in 2018, she was drafted by the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL before moving to the Orlando Pride. However, a serious labral tear led to her retirement after surgery in 2020.
“I am filled with hope that my body will get close to feeling like itself again,” Reid wrote in a 2022 blog post. “And that I will be able to do most of the things I love and that bring me joy, pain-free.”
They Got Engaged and Married in 2022
Allen proposed to Reid in February 2022 during a beachside engagement, sharing photos on Instagram with the caption, “My forever person ❤️🥰💍.” Just a few months later, they had a formal photoshoot with their dog, Teddy, a mini Bernese mountain dog they adopted in 2019.
On July 23, 2022, they tied the knot at Nestldown, an event venue in Los Gatos, Calif. Their dog, Teddy, even served as the ring bearer.
They Welcomed Their Daughter in October 2024
The couple announced their pregnancy in July 2024 and welcomed their daughter, Emslie May, on October 26, 2024. Allen even missed a Phoenix Suns game against the Los Angeles Lakers to be present for the birth.
“I was in go mode, counting down the time of getting there when I can be with [my wife],” he told the Arizona Republic.
Reflecting on fatherhood, Allen expressed his excitement: “We’re very happy and excited to have our first kid here. It’s not much you can say to describe it, but I’m really happy.”
On January 1, 2025, the couple shared their first public phot
o of Emslie on Instagram.
