Ipswich Town are nearing the signing of Ben Godfrey on loan for the January transfer window, according to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The club, currently 18th in the Premier League, is aiming to bolster their defense after conceding 33 goals this season.

Romano confirmed earlier this month that Ipswich had been in talks to secure Godfrey from Serie A’s Atalanta. Today, he provided an update, revealing that the defender has already completed the first part of his medical examination.
The deal is almost finalized, with the necessary paperwork being exchanged. Romano shared the news on social media, saying: “Ben Godfrey to Ipswich Town, exclusive story confirmed — agreement done on loan deal with Atalanta. Godfrey completed the first part of medical tests today and documents are now being exchanged. Here we go.”
The 26-year-old defender, who joined Atalanta from Everton during the summer, has had limited playing time. He has yet to start a match in Serie A and has only played 22 minutes in the league. Atalanta has shown little interest in including him in their starting lineup, prompting the club to send him out on loan. Ipswich Town has acted quickly to finalize the agreement.
Godfrey has played as a centre-back, right-back, and left-back during his career, making over 90 appearances for Everton and 78 for Norwich City. His wealth of Premier League experience could be invaluable for Ipswich as they aim to maintain their position in the top flight.
In their most recent match, Ipswich secured a 2-0 victory over Chelsea. They will face Fulham at Craven Cottage next, although Godfrey is unlikely to be registered in time for that fixture. It is expected that he could feature in Ipswich’s upcoming FA Cup match against Bristol City the following week.
