Here’s why Al Horford didn’t play in preseason games vs. Nuggets

The Boston Celtics have just concluded their two-game series in Abu Dhabi against the Denver Nuggets, who were led by Nikola Jokic. This matchup brought together the last two NBA Champions. Boston used their usual starting lineup for both games, but one key player—Al Horford—was absent.

Kristaps Porzingis also didn’t play, as he’s not expected back until December. Horford was simply a healthy scratch, with Luke Kornet starting in his place. Xavier Tillman and Neemias Queta also stepped in to provide backup minutes in the absence of Horford and Porzingis.

Thankfully, there’s no cause for concern.

Al Horford missed the preseason games against the Nuggets, but he isn’t dealing with an injury. Why didn’t Horford play? According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said it was all about easing him back into action.

“Asked Mazzulla about Horford again and he said that he’s fine. Just gradually ramping up his workload,” Himmelsbach tweeted.

Last season, Horford had another strong year for the Celtics, delivering solid performances throughout the regular season while Porzingis was sidelined. In the playoffs, he stepped up significantly during Porzingis’ extended absence.

However, Boston is being cautious with Horford. At 38 years old, heading into his 18th NBA season, his workload is being carefully managed. Since rejoining the Celtics in 2021, he hasn’t played in back-to-back games, usually sitting out the second game to preserve his body.

This cautious approach has paid off, as Horford has been a key contributor in the playoffs.

While fans might hope to see Horford in action, the Celtics are likely to keep him out for the Abu Dhabi games, possibly featuring him in upcoming preseason games at TD Garden. Keeping him rested is the best decision for now.

Boston is right not to put unnecessary strain on Horford, especially given his age. According to Mazzulla, there’s no need for concern, and that’s great news for the Celtics. They’ll need Horford this season as they deal with Porzingis’ extended absence.

Horford, now 38, is preparing for yet another pivotal season.
