The Ipswich Half Marathon, held on Sunday, witnessed multiple Guinness World Records being broken.
This popular local event attracted thousands of runners who tackled the challenging 13.1-mile course, which started at Portman Road stadium and included scenic routes through the Waterfront, Holywells Park, and the River Orwell.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service made headlines by completing the race in full PPE. Individual participants also aimed for records: Ashley Buxton sought to break the fastest half marathon wearing PT kit and carrying a breath apparatus, while Paul Shattock attempted the same feat in fire PPE with air supply. Additionally, George Trott and Grant Whitehead aimed for the fastest half marathon in firefighter PPR while carrying breathing apparatus.
Though the official results from Guinness World Records are pending, initial timings suggest these runners have surpassed existing records.
Graham Mummery, a partner at Larking Gowen, stated, โWeโre delighted to support the local community and people with their health and wellbeing… It was a great event, huge congratulations to all runners.โ
Participants were encouraged to run for various charities, including the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Lighthouse, and St Elizabeth Hospice.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, operations director at Run For All, expressed gratitude to participants: โA huge well done and thank you to all participants who joined us for one of Suffolkโs flagship running events… The enthusiasm and support from everyone involved ensured the day was a great success.โ
Larking Gowen, the event sponsor, has confirmed its commitment to continue as the title sponsor of the annual run until 2027.
