Ipswich Town are reportedly in discussions to bring former Premier League star Nemanja Matic back to England. The 36-year-old midfielder, who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, is currently playing for Lyon in Ligue 1.
Ipswich, led by manager Kieran McKenna, has already strengthened their squad with two new signings this January: Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta and Jaden Philogene in a ยฃ21million deal from Aston Villa. Now, Ipswich is seeking to add Matic’s experience to their midfield as they look to stay competitive in the Premier League this season.
Matic has made 13 appearances for Lyon this season, helping the French club in their pursuit of a Champions League spot. However, Ipswich faces stiff competition for his signature, with Serie A teams Napoli, Fiorentina, and Como also reportedly interested in the veteran midfielder.
Matic started his career at Slovakian club Kosice before moving to Chelsea in 2009. After a loan spell at Vitesse, he spent several successful years at Benfica, where he won numerous honors and was named Player of the Year in the Portuguese league in 2013. He then returned to Chelsea, making over 150 appearances and winning two Premier League titles.
Later, Matic reunited with Josรฉ Mourinho at Manchester United in a ยฃ40million move before stints at Roma and Rennes. His contract with Lyon expires at the end of next season.
