Ipswich Town are reportedly competing with Southampton to sign 29-year-old midfielder Glen Kamara, aiming to strengthen their squad ahead of the January transfer window.
The Tractor Boys, currently fighting relegation in their first Premier League season, are in dire need of reinforcements. After struggling throughout the season, including a meager two wins and a series of narrow defeats, they are keen to improve their squad to ensure survival.
Ipswich, sitting in the bottom three, have scored just 16 goals this campaign, but despite their tough season, they have been competitive in many matches, often losing by a single goal. Manager Kieran McKenna is determined to improve the team’s fortunes, focusing on small issues in their game.
After a recent game against Arsenal, he praised the team’s efforts, saying, “The players worked really hard and we got the game to a good place in the second half after a good 20 minutes. Early on we were pinned in and couldn’t get out but to where we were after 89 minutes I was really pleased.”
The club has been linked to several potential January signings, including Hakim Ziyech, but now, according to a report by The Boot Room, Kamara is also on Ipswich’s radar. Kamara joined Rennes from Leeds United over the summer but has struggled for playing time, having played just three full matches and not featuring in the starting lineup for Rennes’ last three league games.
Kamara, a Finnish international with over 65 caps, has experience in European competitions but has not yet made his Premier League debut. His current contract with Rennes is worth £29,000 per week, and though he still has almost four years left on his deal, there are suggestions he may leave in January. Ipswich and Southampton are both said to be keen on securing his signature.
Kamara is a deep-lying midfielder, praised for his agility, dribbling, and physicality, which could help improve Ipswich’s midfield options, where McKenna has often relied on Sam Morsy this season. Kalvin Phillips and Jack Taylor are also available, but there is still room for growth in the midfield, especially with Jens Cajuste showing improvement in recent weeks. If Ipswich can fend off Southampton’s interest, Kamara’s arrival could be a key factor in their survival bid.
