After spending much of the 2024–25 season as a top contender in the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies dropped to the eighth seed and were swept in the first round of the playoffs. Now, as they look ahead to next season with hopes of making a serious playoff push, one uneasy question continues to gain momentum: What happens if Ja Morant asks for a trade?
It’s not a scenario Grizzlies fans want to entertain, but the reality is the Western Conference is stacked. With as many as 14 teams potentially in the playoff mix, Memphis could very well find itself battling for a play-in spot again next season.
From Morant’s point of view, that kind of uncertainty might not be ideal at this point in his career. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference appears less volatile, with only a couple of true championship-caliber teams. “If Morant wanted a trade to an Eastern Conference team, it could be a smart move for him as it could make a deeper playoff run more viable.”
Could Morant Seek an Eastern Conference Move?
To be clear, there’s no hard evidence suggesting Ja Morant is unhappy with his current situation. Still, recent NBA history has shown how quickly whispers and rumors can become reality.
Over the last few years, Morant has watched some of his peers—Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander—lead their teams to at least the Conference Finals. “It has to be hard watching your competition reach the heights you think you should be at.”
While Memphis has put a solid roster around Morant, recurring injury issues have consistently disrupted their progress. It’s not outrageous to think that Morant—wearing number 12—might consider a fresh start elsewhere.
For fans of the Grizzlies, it’s a chilling prospect—but one that can’t be dismissed.
