Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran is now at risk of additional punishment from the Football Association (FA) after a charge was brought against him following his suspension.
Duran, who was controversially shown a straight red card for violent conduct in Villaโs 3-0 loss to Newcastle on Boxing Day, is already serving a three-match ban.
The red card was issued after Duran appeared to stamp on the back of Fabian Schar, although some fans argued the decision was harsh as Duran was off-balance. Villa’s appeal was rejected, and the striker began serving his suspension, which started in Villaโs 2-2 draw against Brighton.
However, Duranโs troubles continued when the FA charged him for his behavior after the red card. He was seen kicking a water bottle in frustration on the sideline, before a staff member escorted him down the tunnel.
The FA issued a statement saying: “Jhon Duran has been charged following the Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and Aston Villa on Thursday 26 December 2024. It’s alleged that the Aston Villa forward acted in an improper manner in the 32nd minute of the fixture, after being sent off. Jhon Duran has until Friday 3 January 2025 to provide a response.”
Following the incident, Villa manager Unai Emery commented on Duranโs reaction, stating, “His reaction after with the player over him was, ‘Sorry, sorry’. Then we can try to analyse if he kicked him or not. I think he didn’t kick him on purpose.”
This charge follows another recent FA ruling where Matheus Cunha of Wolves received a two-match ban for misconduct after a physical altercation with an Ipswich Town staff member. Cunha admitted the charge, which led to sanctions being imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission.
