NBA Rumor: Eastern Conference Contender Threatens Sunsโ Pursuit of Jimmy Butler
The Phoenix Suns are widely regarded as the frontrunners in the race to acquire Jimmy Butler, but a recent report from NBA insider Marc Stein reveals that a title contender from the Eastern Conference could pose a serious challenge to their efforts.
While the Miami Heatโs relationship with Butler continues to deteriorate, their 22-22 record and his ongoing clashes with the front office have fueled trade speculation. Butler, a six-time All-Star, has made it clear he wants out of South Beach, and the Suns are reportedly his preferred destination. However, doubts remain about whether Phoenix has the assets to finalize a deal.
The Milwaukee Bucks have emerged as a potential suitor, with Stein noting, โMilwaukee, at the very least, has rival teams wondering if a Butler bid is forthcoming.โ He explained that the Bucks could only acquire Butler by offloading contracts such as Pat Connaughtonโs $9.4 million salary or crafting a deal that includes Khris Middleton and Bobby Portis.
โIf that can happen, though, would the Heat, just to end this draining Butler saga ASAP, be willing to trade Butler for Khris Middleton and Bobby Portis?โ Stein added. โNeither player, crucially, has a contract that extends past 2025-26, which is a huge priority for Miami.โ
However, the Bucks face challenges due to limited draft assets, with only one tradeable first-round pick (2031) and one tradeable second-round pick available to sweeten the deal.
If Milwaukee can overcome these hurdles, adding Butler would make them a serious contender in the East and a legitimate threat to teams like the Boston Celtics. As the drama unfolds, it remains uncertain whether the Bucks or the Suns will land Butler before the trade deadline.
