Kansas City Chiefs 2025 NFL Draft Review: Flawless Picks or Hidden Gaps?

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2025 NFL Draft with high expectations, and their results left little to criticize. They made bold decisions to bolster their team, addressing crucial needs while adding a strong mix of talent. With every pick seemingly in line with their needs and future aspirations, it was a draft many are calling near-perfect.

    What Went Right?

Kansas City focused heavily on protecting Patrick Mahomes, and they kicked off their draft with a standout pick. In the first round, they selected Josh Simmons, a powerful offensive tackle from Ohio State, ensuring Mahomes stays safe on the field. Their next few picks further reinforced their commitment to strengthening the team.

The Chiefs’ defensive moves were also on point. In the second round, they nabbed Omarr Norman-Lott, a defensive tackle from Tennessee, who adds both size and power to their defensive line. They then pulled off an incredible steal by selecting Ashton Gillotte, a pass rusher from Louisville, in the third round. These moves addressed the team’s defensive line woes, bringing in players capable of making immediate contributions.

They didn’t stop there. The Chiefs selected Nohl Williams, a cornerback from Cal, adding depth to their secondary. One of the most exciting picks was Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals, who fell to the fourth round. Royals had second-round potential, making him a fantastic value pick. Oregon linebacker Jeffrey Bassa in the fifth and versatile SMU running back Brashard Smith in the seventh round rounded out the picks, ensuring the Chiefs added well-rounded talent across various positions.

    What Went Wrong?

While the draft overall was a huge success, there were some minor areas of concern. Kansas City didn’t stockpile offensive line talent as much as some fans may have hoped. Additionally, their seven picks filled seven different positions, which doesn’t always work out well in the NFL. The absence of “strength-in-numbers” at any one position might be a subtle risk.

    Best Value Pick: Jalen Royals
The wide receiver from Utah State could have easily been picked much earlier, but the Chiefs landed him in the fourth round, making him a true draft steal.

    Biggest Reach: Omarr Norman-Lott
Though Norman-Lott is a solid pick, selecting him in the second round could be seen as a bit of a reach, as some analysts had him available later in the draft.

    Draft Grade: A
Kansas City’s 2025 draft is considered one of the best, with multiple smart picks that could pay off immediately. The Chiefs are likely to see significant returns from this year’s class.
