The Kings have been repeatedly linked to Jazz forward John Collins as a potential trade target. While a previous report questioned Sacramento’s ability to acquire Nets forward Cameron Johnson, Collins appears to be a more feasible option.
Sacramento has already made Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles, and draft picks available in their pursuit of roster improvements. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, before news surfaced about De’Aaron Fox’s potential availability, the Kings had explored multiple trade scenarios involving Collins.
It remains uncertain how Fox’s situation impacts Sacramento’s interest in Collins. NBA insider Marc Stein notes that it’s also unclear how far negotiations advanced before the Kings began entertaining offers for Fox.
However, James Ham of ESPN1320 stated on The Kings Beat podcast that Sacramento had essentially finalized a deal for Collins and even informed their players before ultimately backing out.
Reacting to the rumors, Collins told The Salt Lake Tribune’s Andy Larsen, “I saw some rumors, but I definitely didn’t hear that.” He continued, “Whatever Sacramento is doing, that’s, you know, their prerogative, if it involves me or not. Obviously, I would have found out. But I’m kind of happy I just didn’t have that news—sorry, nothing against Sacramento—just kind of happy I didn’t have that news hit my phone. I’ve just got to continue to be the best professional I can be and continue playing basketball.”
Financially, a trade package including Huerter ($16.8MM) and Lyles ($8MM) would match Collins’ $26.5MM salary. Collins is averaging 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game this season, with an efficient .531/.446/.869 shooting split.
Collins also spoke about the mental challenges of trade speculation, saying, “It’s a Catch-22. It’s something that I try not to think about because I would get lost in it. And that’s why I just say I’m just happy that I found a nice group of guys here who can talk me through all of the trade rumors. You know what I mean?” He added, “Because this is not an easy thing mentally, to think about whether it might be a better situation or worse situation, and whatever situation is out there, it’s not my current one. So it’s hard for me to think about that and focus.”
