The New York Knicks have signed veteran forward and former NBA champion P.J. Tucker to strengthen their rotation. According to ESPNโs Shams Charania, Tucker, a 14-year NBA veteran, has agreed to a 10-day contract with the team.
Charania reported that Tucker had discussions with multiple teams after being waived by the Toronto Raptors before the March 1 deadline, making him eligible for the playoffs. The 39-year-old last played in May 2024 for the Los Angeles Clippers during their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks. Since then, he has spent time with the Clippers, Utah Jazz, and Raptors before being waived in February.
Back in October 2024, the Clippers released a statement explaining that they and Tucker had mutually agreed he would not be with the team while they worked on finding him a new opportunity. “P.J. is a pro who has achieved a lot in his career and there’s more he wants to accomplish,” the Clippers stated. “We will continue working with P.J. and his representative to find the best situation for him moving forward.”
In February, Tucker spoke with Andscape about his desire to be traded, expressing his hopes of finding a new team. “I want to be somewhere where I’m needed, wanted, and can do it all,” Tucker said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I have my fingers crossed and I’m hoping to go somewhere else, whether I get bought out and choose where I go or where I can play.”
Now joining the Knicks, who currently hold the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, Tucker is expected to play a role alongside teammates like Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. This will be the eighth team of his career, which began in the 2006-07 season.
Over 883 career games, Tucker has averaged 6.6 points on 42.5% shooting, 36.6% from three, along with 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He was a key contributor to the Milwaukee Bucks’ championship run in the 2020-21 season.
